LCDS Grandparents Dr. Bernard and Lynn Kapiloff
Establish Scholarship Fund
Lehrman Community Day School proudly announces that LCDS grandparents Dr. Bernard and Lynn Kapiloff have established the Dr. Bernard and Lynn Kapiloff Scholarship Endowment, in honor of their parents Mordechai and Rebecca Kapiloff & Rabbi Norman and Louise Gerstenfeld.
The Endowment is being funded by interests in Maryland real estate. In accordance with the School's Gift Acceptance Policy, the School does not publicly declare the value of non-cash gifts until disposition.
Explained Bernard Kapiloff: "Through our grandchildren and through this gift, our family is honored to be a part of the success and growth of LCDS. We encourage other grandparents to join us--there is no better reward than to shape the lives of young people. Jewish education was most important to our parents and we now continue that legacy with their names on this scholarship fund."
Added Lynn Kapiloff: "We know good education when we see it, and we are amazed by the interdisciplinary and multicultural education being offered to our grandchildren. We are so happy to partner with the professional and volunteer leadership of LCDS to make affordable to more families something truly transformational and lasting."
Board Chair Roger Miller lauded the gift: "We deeply appreciate the great generosity of the Kapiloffs. This significant gift will make our remarkable program more accessible financially to more students. As reflected in the packed house on Grandparents' and Special Friends Day, grandparents are becoming increasingly involved in school life and we welcome such participation in every way."
Added Head of School Seth Linfield, "The Kapiloffs are entrusting us to carry forward their enduring commitment to better mankind, by educating and raising tomorrow's heroes of science, the arts and life. We are humbled by the magnitude of this gift as we steward the sacred charge to assure robust diversity in our student population."
Dr. Bernard and Mrs. Lynn Kapiloff live as exemplary models of tikkun olam, both within the Jewish community and the world at large. Dr. Kapiloff has served on the Board of The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, chaired the Professional Division of Israel Bonds in Maryland, and served as President of the Maryland Council for the Jewish National Fund. Both a dentist and a surgeon who practiced for over 50 years, Dr. Kapiloff is a former Associate Professor of the Howard University Dental School, as well as a former Instructor of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University and Howard University Schools of Medicine. Dr. Kapiloff is Emeritus Chief of Plastic Surgery for the Baltimore area Sinai, Homewood, and Northwest Provident and Liberty Hospitals and a former member of various State Commissions, including serving a prominent role on the Maryland State Health Services Cost Review Commission in the 1970s. At 92, he still works every day, managing the family's real estate portfolio and serving on the Board of the Jewish National Fund Maryland.
Mrs. Kapiloff serves a similarly prominent role in her community. She is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the award-winning weekly Montgomery and Prince George's County Newspapers, for which Dr. Kapiloff is the Publisher. Mrs. Kapiloff has served as the Chair of the Maryland State Board of Social Services and as a local board member for the American Cancer Society and for Friends of Artists Equity, among others. Within the Jewish community, Mrs. Kapiloff has served on the Board of Beth Am Synagogue and in various leadership roles for Israel Bonds, The Associated, Hadassah and the Jewish National Fund.
The Kapiloffs have focused much of their lives on philanthropy, from Dr. Kapiloff's extensive pro bono work as a surgeon, especially in the African-American community, to their involvement with and donations to many civic organizations. Jewish education has always been a priority. They underwrote the founding of the Kapiloff Religious School of the B'nai Shalom Congregation in Olney, Maryland, and have supported the Talmudical Academy and Yeshivat Rambam School in Baltimore.
Nothing is more important to Dr. and Mrs. Kapiloff than their three children Mimi, Mark, and LCDS parents son Michael and daughter-by-marriage Judy (co-chair of the LCDS Annual Campaign!) and their two grandchildren Rebecca and Hannah.
Lehrman Community Day School (LCDS) is a Jewish academic community formed around a pluralistic, day school Now in its 50th year, LCDS prepares more than 300 young men and women to live heroically, as reflective Jews and responsible American citizens in a global economy.
